Hi, I'm Toby. I'm a technical artist with a passion for learning new creative and technical skills. I have a love for blending creativity and problem-solving, whether tackling high-level project challenges or refining intricate details.
I thrive both independently and collaboratively. In previous roles, I actively improved communication channels and workflow processes, while also providing support and training to colleagues. I'm a lifelong learner, constantly engaging in personal projects and tutorials to expand my skillset and integrate new tools and techniques into my workflow.
While I initially trained as an animator, I've evolved into more of a technical generalist. I'm proficient in various aspects of the creative process, offering a versatile skillset that can adapt to diverse project needs.
Since graduating from SAE in 2016, I've been fortunate enough to pursue my passion through creating for Games, Youtube, Corporate Media and Music.
Tech Artist/Art Team Lead
May 2021 - Current
I started as a Tech Artist focused on VFX, where I created particle systems, assets, and shaders (sometimes from scratch, sometimes modifying existing ones).
After a year, I took on more responsibility and led the art team. This meant working with other teams to plan upcoming releases, assigning tasks to team members, creating training materials and documentation, and helping everyone troubleshoot technical issues in Blender or Unity.
To make things more efficient, I also created some handy editor scripts and Blender add-ons for asset creation.
Tech Lead
2020 - 2021
I joined Synctum to help develop tools for virtual production in Unreal Engine.
My main task was building template projects, compositing materials, and using blueprints and HTC vive trackers to synchronize real-life camera movements with virtual cameras in Unreal Engine.
We ended up with a hardware/software solution that let camera operators film a subject on a greenscreen and see the backgrounds update in real-time. It could also composite digital subjects into real backgrounds live.
AV Technician
Aug 2018 - Jun 2020
At QPAC I worked in the broadcast department. I learned the ropes on the Ross Graphite and XPression systems and helped get the new broadcast suite up and running.
After that, I wore a lot of hats: switching, Setting up/packing down shows, AV support, camera operation, on-air graphics, and organizing live streams for events and performances.
I also created promotional content for upcoming seasons and shows.
Motion Graphics Artist
May 2018 - Aug 2018
At 3p I worked in the motion graphics team creating online and television content.
I was primarily creating motion graphics from briefs, storyboards, provided assets and from scratch, but I also got out of the office sometimes for videography and drone jobs.
Some of the projects I worked on were for the Australian Government, Endeavour prize homes, Subway and Goa.

2016 - 2018
At Halfbrick, I mainly created content for our social media channels, announcing new products and updates to our games.
I also ran user acquisition campaigns across Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, and Vungle. My team and I worked on improving the lifetime value of acquired users by using data on ad interaction and user activity to guide our creative decisions.
On top of that, I created 3D assets, VFX, lighting, and UI/UX for the games Shadows Remain and Raskulls Online.
To improve efficiency, I tackled the challenge of streamlining our workflows for video and game asset production. My solutions included writing scripts to automate project setup and building render farms to speed up asset delivery.
Cinematographer/ VFX/Animation
2011 - 2014
Before I studied animation, Some friends and I rented a warehouse in an industrial zone. We ran a creative collective called Contortionist Studios.
We had many different disciplines all living and working from this space and it's where I first got into videography, editing, motion graphis, and sound design.
During our three years there, I worked on a bunch of different projects, like short films, music videos, and a few corporate videos.
I also managed the AV setup for the musical, theatrical, and artistic events we hosted.
